Hillside Club
2286 Cedar St.
Berkeley, CA 94709

This is a queer-friendly event where everyone is welcome to lead and follow.

There is no dance class at this event, but beginners are welcome. We encourage practicing at this practica!

BYOB: Beer and wine only. No hard alcohol. All ages welcome. Please bring your water bottles.

Note to beginners: You are welcome at our event. If you would like to dance with others, we recommend looking around the room for people who are making eye contact with you, especially at the beginning of a song or set. If you meet someone’s eyes and want to dance with them, give a little nod. This is called the cabeceo. Then one or both people will walk towards each other to start dancing. If you don’t look around, you might not notice that someone is trying to dance with you. You can also say “Would you like to dance?” If someone asks you to dance, you are free to say “yes” or “no, thank you.”

This is a tango practica (not a milonga) that takes place in the San Francisco Bay Area about once a month.  This event is in Berkeley, near Oakland, in the East Bay Area!  See you soon!

Hosts Lindsey Newbold and Alec Oyung

The mission of Las Almas is to present contemporary Argentine tango through virtuosic artistic performance and educational events. Sumi Lee, Heyni Solera, and Teagan Faran originally bonded in Buenos Aires, drawn by a mutual love of tango music, as well as by a realization of the inequality of professional opportunity for women in the tango genre. They studied under the same maestros and performed with prestigious tango orchestras in Buenos Aires. They now frequently perform around the world, including in their respective adopted cities of San Francisco (Sumi), Washington, DC (Heyni), and NYC (Teagan). All of the musicians also produce their own music.
